The PFEIFER Group with its headquarters in Memmingen, Germany is one of the worlds leading companies for wire rope, lifting and building technology. The Group is comprised of companies in Germany and abroad and focuses on wire rope, elevator technology, cable structures, building technology, lifting technology, attachment and lashing equipment, mining and industry. Recent projects include the cable roof structures for 6 of the 12 stadiums used during the World Cup in Germany in 2006.
When carrying out project planning for cable-supported structures, there are many safety requirements to fulfil because people's lives depend on the perfect condition of the material. To be sure that the material and components meet these requirements, they have to be thoroughly tested. Using their modular system, the test specialists at Zwick developed a customized test solution for PFEIFER suitable for:
- Tensile tests on ropes and rope accessories
- Tensile tests on attachment material
- Tensile tests on components, eg. concrete reinforcement steel (rebar) swaged connections
The unit is supplied in a horizontal layout in order to clamp the length of rope which is approximately 8 m long. The Z800EL Zwick machine has an electro-mechanical drive and a capacity up to 800kN. In this case, and in contrast to other horizontal units of this kind, a hydraulic solution was not chosen. The main reason was that a very large test stroke can be achieved and there is also no need for the repetitive, expensive use of hydraulic oil, and the associated servicing costs. The customer's existing tooling and fixtures could also be used.
In order to measure the extension of the specimens an optical long travel extensometer was used, and protected against specimen fragments via a protection shield. Furthermore, the operator is protected by a device which is reinforced with steel sheets and can be pneumatically lowered over the test axis via a switch. This completely encloses the axis during the test.
The applications are controlled via Zwick's intelligent testXpert® II testing software. Characterised by its simple and intuitive operation, the operator merely chooses the desired test standard, enters the specimen dimensions and starts the test procedure. Clear symbols and structure ensure that the software is extremely easy to learn and use. The menu bar is configured to the requirements of the user and a comprehensive online help always finds the right answer. testXpert® II incorporates tools to process the test results, and the system includes customized report layouts and allows the transfer of test data to other systems, such Excel®, Word® or Access®.
