Using the Glow Wire test to reduce fire hazards

International Standards specify that enclosures or cables which carry electrical equipment or wiring must pass a Glow Wire ignitability or flammability test. The main purpose of such tests is to ensure that in the event of a fault which causes the wiring to heat up inside the enclosure, the enclosure or cable sheath does not ignite itself or any adjacent component.

Organisations such as Bayer Materials Science carry out such tests to ensure the materials supplied by them meet all the relevant Standards.
